I was taken aback by her descriptions of overt racism against aboriginal peoples. I thought Australia was very enlightened where racism is concerned.

Well, that depends how you define it and from what time period you're in. The stolen generation is a horrible black mark on our history, but nowdays, it varies - A lot of people will speak in a manner you'd probably consider racist, but the people are not actually racists, we just take the whole thing less seriously. For example, an advertisement that had white cricket fans offering West Indian cricket fans a bucket of fried chicken as a peace offering would be a point of outrage in the states, but aired here without comment. Well, except for commenting on the outraged Americans, half a world away.

However, I don't deny there is some racism on both sides - If you want an example of how aboriginal people can be ridiculously racist, spend some time listening to a Radio host Called Tyga Bales, who is essentially as racist as you can possibly overtly be, and not get torn to shreds and lose your radio show. As for white people, look at say, Andrew bolt.

We're pretty good about it, to be honest, but there are the bastards in every group. We're just a lot more relaxed about it than Americans or British people.
  • Please understand that I was not saying something ridiculous like, "Australia is racist." I was just surprised that the reported racism exceeded my optimistic expectations, which were really pretty (as Hungry Joe would say) pollyanna.

  • Random fact - I'm considered a full adult in Aboriginal Society, in the terminology, I've got my paints.

Oh my god, this cut-and-paste thing is so cool when handled by creative funny people. I'm cracking up right now.

    Cool cut-and-paste comic.

Oh, don't worry, I'm not saying you did, don't worry. I simply mean to say that we..hm..the best way to put it is that we have a higher bar for what is and isn't racism, as per the Fried chicken example.

However, I do get what you're saying, and I do agree, though - While you possibly had a slightly unrealistic expectation, a trip out to some - or even many - parts of the outback(and even some outlying parts of the cities) do give you a rather disappointing picture of these things. Takes the shine off the apple.

Being an adult in Aboriginal Society is a bit of ceremony and the like - at least, in the traditional way of thought - and I spent a fair bit of time with the Mt isa mob up there, and so, Old Arthur sent me out one day to find some paintings, and when I found them, came back, and described them to Arthur, two nights later, all the ceremony and such, and I was brought into aboriginal society as a full adult. As Arthur used to say, "Gibbsie, you de whitest blackfella I ever seen, ay."

    Yes.

Gears of War developer Epic is doing something interesting. As some of you may know (though with the Console Shooter Hate going around here most probably don't) the Gears of War series features a group of characters called the Carmine brothers. They are basically the Red Shirts of the series and destined to die some gruesome, horrible death just to show dangerous the world the game is set in really is. Anthony Carmine got shot in the head by a Locust sniper in GOW. In the 2nd game, Benjamin Carmine was swallowed by the giant Tunneler wurm, only to be mauled by the dog-sized parasites living inside it.

The third game will feature another Carmine brother, but this time there is a twist. Epic offers special t-shirts for your XBox avatar online which either read "Save Carmine" or "Carmine must die", with the sales numbers deciding what will happen to the third brother. And while I'm usually against such virtual merchandise, the proceeds go to Child's Play.

The T-Shirts are also available in Real Life, but only at the San Diego Comic-Con.

It's not that much, just a bonfire, some words are said, some paint gets rubbed on you, a bit of dancing about, then everyone goes down the pub and gets stinking drunk afterwards. It's nothing too amazing, really, the only thing that makes it special is that I'm a whitefella, not a blackfella. It certainly helped that 30 years before that, my old man had the same happen to him, from the same bloke - easier for me than most people.

You wanna know the trick? Just never not be doing something. Always be on the move, always doing something, always on the graft. Someone rings you up at three in the morning and says "Hey, you wanna go skydiving, I'm at the front door" you don't say "Nah, man, it's 3am, I gotta do stuff tomorrow" you say "Hell yeah, lemmie put some pants on, I'll put me boots on in the car." And then you fall from the sky, and you get your shit done that day too, even though you're tired, or hungover, or weary, or half beaten down, you gut it out and keep going. Every single time something comes up, do it. If you're going to seize the day, Seize it by the balls and twist. Make life your bitch.

Not big in circumference, but there are some Chicagoan artists that are a fair hand with microfine print. Though, I would probably go with a similar, more famous quote with the same message. If I get any tattoos at all, that is.

Of course you should get a tattoo! Didn't you read the quote you wanted to tattoo onto yourself?
  • Also, how did this thread clear 10,000 posts without any comments?

    You're completely correct.

Better start saving for the coat of arms I've been wanting.

This is something I found to be very fascinating and I wanna share it with all of you animators, inkers, artists, etc. This is a man I'm sure you are very familiar with: Doug TenNapel. Doug here is talking about animating digitally with a Wacom Cintiq. Also be sure to check his the inking vid that is on the same channel as he has much sage advice and wisdom to impart to any young, aspiring artist.

    Sweet! DO IT!
  • Just get the tattoo in a place you won't regret. Arms are not good of you ever want to wear short sleeves in a formal situation.
  • Just a reminder that you'll get a ton of shit if you ever plan on going to Japan with tattoos.
