  • I seem to have come down with a cold... Not the worst cold I have, but enough to be a nuisance. I also may need to work over this weekend due to a customer issue involving code I worked on.
  • Wait, if the fetus is evidence shouldn't it be locked up in the evidence room at the police station?
New episode of Fast Karate. "You're coming with us, Fetus!"
  • And can't you do a paternity test on fetuses in the womb now? So can't they just get a sample and then let her abort if she wants?
  • This just reminded me of the incredibly embarrassed frat guy in the walmart line bitching to his friend on the phone that his girlfriend made him pick up a pregnancy test because she didn't use the previous one properly.

Every time I'm ever in a walmart is an... experience.
  • Abort? That's evidence! Make sure it gets to the PD right after you take it out.
  • What I don't understand about this law is why it was proposed? No one makes any money from it and no one gets any more power. Swing voters are put off by strong positions on abortion, not attracted to it.
  • Supposedly the reasoning is that it is aimed at the perpetrators. Sometimes, in domestic abuse situations particularly, women are forced to have abortions as a control mechanism. However, there is really no more way of finding out if she was forced into an abortion than there is if she was forced into the sex in he first place, so it seems pretty dumb.

Also, if she has an abortion, there should be a clear record of it. So there's still evidence of the pregnancy! And yes, they absolutely could keep DNA samples if that was the main concern.
  • That's rhetoric. Politicians don't pass legislation for rhetorical reasons. Politicians pass legislation because it gets them either votes (which leads to), power (which leads to), or money.
  • Sorry for the double post, but this is seriously getting under my skin:

A depressive friend just posted to FB that she feels useless, inferior, and that no one loves her, but I have no contact info to help her. Trying to get her number from somebody, but I can't reach anyone. I've been there, and (approx.) no one was there for me. I can't let that happen to someone else.
  • Fail of my Week: Every dishwasher but me has quit. I am doing all the shifts. Have not had time or energy to work on my indie game. Fuck this job.
  • Yesterday I was talking with my roommate about how we were overdue for a fire alarm.
This morning at ~4:40, somebody on another floor burned popcorn and triggered a fire alarm.

    I somehow feel responsible.

... and I guess that is a bad thing because they are not informed enough about it?

Maybe it is that they are his friends on Facebook.

  • Monsanto IS kind of evil. But not because they are selling GMOs. It's because they exploit the cost of the legal system to steamroll small farmers even when the farmers are in the right.

Got a wired GB connection to the router and then discovered what latency compensation is..

So the reason I'm two feet away behind a wall and still get shot is because other people are lagging and the server rewinds my position to the point where it calculated me as being when they fired, then updates me as being dead.

So my theory of extra deadly bullets being a few seconds of bullets compressed into one with a death signal being sent part way between is somewhat accurate, but it's not because of latency from the server to me, but they other guy to the server.

    Indeed...
  • The company I work for uses a couple of products from InstantASP, who make sort of wiki, forum and knowledgebase software. They are now also now creating a ticketing system called Influx. Recognize the logo from anywhere?
  • Ah latency. I recall a game of BF3 where I was in a tank and unable to kill a guy on foot rushing my tank.

So I'm confused by capital gains. I bought a car from my mom for $1, but sold it $1200. Do I have to pay capital gains on it cause it's personal property? According to the rules, I can't write off the loss if there had been one, so why should I have to pay taxes on the gain? Can I deduct the tires I had to put on the car from the gains?

  • Why are you even putting that on your taxes?

I haven't yet, I'm trying to figure out if I even need to.
  • Power has been our for fifteen hours now, no signs of getting fixed any time soon. Energex is saying 36-48 hours for restoration at least, but they might just be pulling a Scotty.
  • Do you have running water?

Yeah, water isn't power-based here. And we do have hot water - our hot water system is Gas hot water, so that's no trouble. Really, the biggest problem is that I'm kinda set back for work - I keep the majority of my work stuff on my main computer, I'm set up for working remotely, not completely independent of it - and that it's a pain in the arse to make tea, I spent most of yesterday boiling water over hexamine tabs and a small camp stove. I've got power over at the family business right now, while everyone else isn't here, but in a few hours time, I'm out the door and into the street.

At least I have enough cash to grab a gas can for my gas stove, so that'll be easier and faster than the emergency stove. I've been meaning to grab a refill for storm season or the next time I went on a longer trip, whichever came first, but I just didn't get around to it.

It's mostly an annoyance - I've camped out in the bush for more than a month at a time, a little hassle like this is nothing much - but it's the lost work time that I'm concerned about.
  • If you have running water, then you're good. I once had no power for 28 hours, and since our well was 800 ft deep that meant no water and toilets for over a day. That sucked.

Ah, we're all good here on that front. The system is designed to supply even with extended power outages.

  • Your hot water system is 100% gas powered? Never heard of that before.
